The BDE therefore supports numerous database languages. Do you know what database language the databse is? One program that's handy for some of these is the Jedi Database Desktop. (look under the 'jedidbd' header and download jedidbd_install_0.2.0.0.ex e Delphi used to come with a program called 'Database Desktop' which was used to view, edit, and create tables in various formats for use with the BDE. The program was only available through Corel or Delphi, but that's where the Jedi Databse Desktop comes in - it's opensource and free - but it can't do much more than just look at the database tables and let you edit the data itself. There are numerous other freeware and trial applications that can look at databases for you. To help you further you'd have to provide some of the database filenames so we can get an idea on the database language. On the other hand. I just thought of this. If the application has Borland Deatabas Engine installed you can run the BDE Administrator and you can usually see what database ALIASes have been setup, what language they are for, and their location. Fiddle around in their and it might tell you the language. This is normally located at c: Program Files Common Files Borland BDE bdeadmin.exe. BDE stands for Borland Database Engine and it is Borlands version of ODBC. They both have the same goal, to allow programmers access to diverse databases through support of one protocol. The BDE has no inherent database format. Find the database file(s) and you should be able to figure out their type. Paradox files would have file extensions like.PDX,.PDY and DBase style files would have.DBF. Normally with these formats you will have an associated index file type as well. You could find access files (MDB I believe), etc. Most likely you could access the same files with ODBC. If you need more help, please post the database file type. My personal guess is that it is an Access database file. I guess that due to the single file. You could try changing the extension of the file to.MDB and see if you can open it in Access. If you can then you have your answer. That is the only simple test I can recommend off the top of my head though. I do know that the list of database types to try is limited to what your version of the BDE will support. Go to the control panel and open the BDE Administrator. You can try to create a new BDE alias to see what databases are supported for a BDE alias. I hope that helps. To be honest I'm not sure of the use of bds52f.dll and owl52f.dll - someone else might be, but I'm not. However it does seem that you can confirm that your database is a single-file database. Paradox is not a single-file databsae. Firebird I think can be. Access databases are single-file. Someone more knowledgeable on databases might know of more examples. Another idea for you is the installation process, installation instructions, settings, help files, documention or website of the product in question All these things might mention the kind of database used. If during the application's install it shows Firebird than that is a strong clue. Or the support documentation might mention what to do in the event of certain database errors, or what happens if you forget the password to the database etc Good luck. If the file is an access database as developmentguru suggests, it will usually create a temporary second file when you run the application, and remove it when you close the application. The file is the locking file, it will have the same name as the database but a different extension, I think it's 'ldb' Of course, it is possible to tell the application to not do this, such as if it is only reading the data, or if the application is not intended to be used by more than one user. You can also tell us the size of the file, although it might not say much.
